Celebrating ACJ’s Achievements & Supporting Justice in 2024

Dear Friends/Supporters/Members,

Happy Holidays to All!

As we wrap up 2024, American Citizens for Justice (ACJ) would like to extend our deepest gratitude for your continued support and for the collective efforts of the community of activists working alongside us in the pursuit of justice, civil rights advocacy, education, and empowerment for AAPIs and the broader community.

We are proud of the progress we’ve made this year, and we want to share some highlights with you:

  • April Court Watch: In support of the Yang family during the trial of Thomas Olson for the killing of Chong Moua Yang, which resulted in a 24.5-year sentence.
  • Vincent Chin Street Designation: Successfully helped secure approval for Vincent Chin Street as a secondary street designation at Cass and Peterboro, with Detroit City Council voting 8-1 in favor, making it the top choice out of 15 options.
  • Chinatown Vision Committee: Established to foster the preservation and redevelopment of the historic Chinatown area at Cass & Peterboro.
  • “Know Your Rights” Pamphlet: Translated into six languages to better serve our community.
  • Public Service Announcement: Airing regionally on Comcast Xfinity in November, offering guidance and support for those in need.
  • AAPI Documentary Film Series: Featuring 10 films screened at the Detroit Historical Museum in April, as part of the Freep Film Festival.
  • Community Engagement: Met with Farmington Hills Mayor Theresa Rich and Police Chief King regarding anti-Asian incidents in the city.
  • “MR2H – Michigan Response to Hate” Conference: Participated in the Michigan Department of Civil Rights conference at MSU in September.
  • SLAY Conference: Presented on the importance of storytelling when addressing anti-Asian incidents at the SLAY student conference at Canton High School.
  • National Voter Registration Day: Engaged in voter registration efforts at the U-M Diag on September 17.

…and the list continues.

When your child is bullied because of their background, when you are denied service at a business, or when you experience hate at a restaurant for being Asian American, remember: ACJ is here to help.

What is our ask?

As we enter this season of giving and gratitude, we ask for your support to continue our vital work. Much of what we do relies on the dedication of volunteers and their donated time, but advocacy and education come with costs. Our administrative expenses are rising, and with that, so are the requests for ACJ’s assistance.

Please consider making an end-of-year donation to support our mission. Simply press the Donate button, or scan the QR code with a phone camera to contribute.
