ACJ Statement in Response to the Act of Hate in Plainfield, Illinois

In another devastating act of violence, a landlord in Illinois attacked a Palestinian-American family for being Muslim this Sunday.  The landlord murdered a six-year-old child, Wadea Al-Fayoume, and injured his mother, Hanaan Shahin.  We send our deepest condolences to Shahin and Wadea’s loved ones.

As an organization dedicated to civil rights advocacy, American Citizens for Justice denounces the inflammatory language that precipitated this attack.  Whether anti-Asian, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, or anti-Black, hateful rhetoric threatens lives and will continue to do so if we do not challenge it with collective action.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has real effects on many in this country.  But we implore against the imprudent scapegoating of ethnic populations as the events overseas evolve.  In times of heightened fear and anxiety, misinformation can dominate the media and political sphere.  It is best practice to review news sources, exercise compassion for all those affected by this violence, and support victims and their families.  Going forward, American Citizens for Justice renews our vow to achieve racial equality and justice, and encourages everyone to participate in the movement.
